• I have a fear of blood, but I don't know why, I've heard it could be passed down from other family members, but none of my family are squeamish, like myself. The other day I was in my English class, and my teacher was talking about medieval torture. I started feeling utterly sick, I told the teacher, who carried on, and I ended up fainting. So, does anyone know if fainting can be because of a fear, or anything like that? I don't have any medical conditions, and I only start feeling sick when medical things involving bodies are talked about, I can read about them fine, it's just if I see it, or hear what's happening/happened.

  • I'm the exact same. I fainted in class once for the same reason.

    Here's what I found:
Syncope [pronounced sin-co-pee]: a sudden brief loss of consciousness

In the case of fainting at the sight of blood, syncope results from non-cardiovascular causes, particularly due to problems with the autonomic nervous system, which is responsible for many of our bodily functions, including regulating blood pressure, heart rate, and our responses to anxiety, fear and emotional stress. Vasovagal syncope, typically precipitated by unpleasant physical or emotional stimuli (eg, pain, fright, sight of blood), usually occurs when a person is standing upright. The feeling of fear or anxiety at the sight of blood is the cause of the onset of fainting:

  • Usually does relate to a fear, yes. When you're scared, your heartbeat rises and occasionally in some people this results in a total shut down. Something to do with the nervous system.

Unless you faint regularly, then you shouldn't really worry too much. And tell your teacher next time to stop being such an ignorant b@stard.

By the way, my username for a bit was "hannahissocoollike" but then I thought I'd leave it to Charlie. =)

  • Fainting often occurs when there is lack of oxygen to the brain, so when you are in fear you tend to breathe less so less oxygen reaches the brain, that's why it could happen.
